Puerto Rico Birth Certificate Issue - Manolo Pazos - Rhode Island News Conference - March 26, 2009

Manolo Pazos

Public News Conference Scheduled – Friday, March 26th

Puerto Rico Birth Certificates

(Providence, Rhode Island)  Doctor Manolo Pazos, international radio personality and the “Voice of America” familiar to many latinos in New England, New York and Latin America has been chosen by the Puerto Rican Cultural Festival and Parade of Rhode Island, the Puerto Rican Heritage Committee of Rhode Island and others to moderate a public news conference at the Iglesia Getsemani Church on 38 Park Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on Friday, March 26th at 1:30pm.

This Public News Conference is being held because all US Citizens born in Puerto Rico, regardless of age or health will have their birth certificates revoked on July 1st 2010 and must apply for a new one on or after that date.

RI Representative Scott Slater will announce a resolution he and other legislators plan to introduce for a “grace period” extending the date Rhode Island agencies will accept the birth certificates until October 1st.

”This is to ease the anxiety I’ve been hearing about from our Rhode Island residents of Puerto Rico birth,” Slater said in a meeting.  “It has nothing to do with the actions of our residents here.  Puerto Ricans are United States Citizens by birth.  This was done to help combat identity theft, ruined credit, stolen social security benefits, and generally increase homeland security in general.  This resolution we want to introduce should ease the stress on our residents and administration.”

The Director of Puerto Rico Federal Affairs, Luis Balzac, will be here to answer questions and correct misinformation already in the media.  Also confirmed as attending are RI State Rep Joe Almeida, RI Rep Peter F. Kilmartin, Providence Councilman Luis Aponte, Officials for the Puerto Rican Cultural Festival and Parade Committee of Rhode Island, the Puerto Rican Heritage Committee of Rhode Island, representatives for the Colombian American Cultural Society and other invitees.

The media and spectators are invited to attend.  Questions will be welcome.
