New York guitarist, choreographer connected by blues, rock and roots music
share spotlight and audiences.
Paul Zunno the guitarist/singer who played lead with the late Wilson Pickett for many years says he knew nothing about dance before Harris invited him to a performance using his blues CD. But something clicked and he realized that the dancing brought something wonderful to his songs. Working together they arranged a unique live performance combining Zunno's solo acoustic concert with the modern/jazz dance of Harris. This show offers a twist on the traditional music concert by incorporating professional dance, a formula which is growing in interest (and bookings) throughout the United States and Canada.
Harris, best known for her powerful yet graceful choreography was the youngest student ever to be accepted into Zenon Dance Company's scholarship program and studied at Ballet Arts Minnesota under Bonnie Mathis and Lirena Branitski. She has studied and performed at The Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Jacobs Pillow, Jazzart and The Boston Summer dance festivals. After receiving her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Minnesota in 2001 she moved to New York City. Harris has worked for numerous choreographers including Colin Connor, Jana Hicks, Laurie Devito and Cathy Young.
Zunno is a highly accomplished guitarist who has performed throughout Europe, The United States and Australia. His music can be heard on MTV's "The Real World" and in a number of independent films. He has appeared on "David Letterman" in support of Pickett's last album and can be seen in the Miramax film, "Only the Strong Survive" backing up Pickett in a live performance. Zunno has also written and recorded songs for Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame inductee Gary U.S. Bonds.
Zunno never doubted that his audience would enjoy the combination. "I've had guys you'd never expect tell me how much they loved the dancing," he said. "It's unaffected like the music and people seem to relate." He performs his originals along with acoustic covers of songs by Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and The Doors while Harris Dances.
Always willing to teach and share the limelight, Zunno and Harris arrive days in advance of their performance. Harris recruits dancers from local schools for a two day master class and choreographs the students into the show. This creates a unique performance in each locale with a distinctly warm, local feeling for audiences. Meanwhile Zunno will give live workshops to share his technique and experience.
They always have a local musician open the show. "Having local people involved is great." said Zunno. "There's nothing more fun than entertaining an audience that has a personal interest in what we are doing. It's a synergy of music, dance and people - it's all about the entertainment."
Zunno has released three diverse albums; "The Honeybee", "Black & White and Blues All Over" and his newest release "Paul Zunno - Solo Acoustic."
Harris and Zunno's company, Onesock Productions is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization.
